  1. MORREION 6 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Morreion," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller in 1979.

"Volition" is the act of making choices, making decisions. It is a fundamental attribute all artists must have because that is what art is all about; the constant making of decisions while in the process of doing the artwork. If for nothing else, an artist can be credited for having volition, for trying.

The world is over-populated with people having little or poor volition, and no wonder, making good choices and important decisions, especially at critical times, is often very difficult.

I don't know what they teach in our schools nowadays, I'm so far removed from it for so many years, but none of the schools I ever went to even mentioned "volition" and I doubt that they bring it up today. And yet it's so important to your life.

The thing about making decisions is that even though you make a proper one based on good information and reasoned logic, the result may be negative, failure. A good decision does not guarantee a good result.

And that's what every writer and artist faces when they start out trying to make their mark in the world of art and entertainment. Even having "talent" does not guarantee success. But unless you have volition, to make that decision to try, you will never realize your dream of success.
